FAQ

How important is my car tyre pressure?

Although you may not realise it, having the correct tyre pressure can have a major impact on a number of important factors for your car – so it is advised that you ensure it is at its optimum at all times. Your tyres play a pivotal role in your car’s handling because every action you make is channelled through them, so if the pressure is incorrect it could create a delay in your commands and result in an accident.

Too much pressure and your car could become unstable, as even the slightest movement from your steering wheel could send you off course. Too little, and your car may develop a tendency to veer off in a particular direction making it unsafe to drive. That is why it is important to have the right tyre pressure because even if there is a slight difference in pressures then your handling can become extremely unstable – especially at higher speeds. So if you begin to notice that your car isn’t responding as it normally would then you may want to consider locating your nearest garage or petrol station to address the problem.

What makes a good tyre?

There are a number of things which can indicate a high quality tyre, with the most noticeable aspect being found in its tread. It is legally required that your tyre should have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm so that you can be sure it can maintain its grip on the roads and in wet conditions, because if the tyre is allowed to go bald you are at risk of becoming unstable. When the weather is poor and wet, it reduces the amount of friction between tyres and road and you are more likely to lose grip and slide or skid with your steering ability consequently much less than normal.

A good tyre will provide you with substantial grip and even provide a better stopping distance when breaking, which could make a real difference in an emergency situation. Another factor of a good quality tyre is that it will provide a smoother ride and in doing so offer you better fuel consumption, meaning that it actually pays to purchase a new tyre.
